Rodeo Beach: One of the best beaches in Marin
Jul 8, 2010
Rodeo Beach off the Sausalito exit consists of a small but lovely stretch of sand bordered by the hills of Marin on one side and protective, rocky cliffs on the other. Fort Cronkhite makes a unique backdrop, and of course, the front-row view of the immense Pacific is the best selling point.
Given its ideal location just two miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge, Rodeo Beach gives visitors a range of choices to broaden their day trip. Beachgoers can strap on their hiking shoes at any point during their sunbathing excursion and trek the nearby bluffs. More adventurous types can hike all the way to Point Bonita or even Tennessee Valley. Another option is to explore the former military post behind the beach through a Fort Cronkhite walking tour.
But the best option is to stay put – Rodeo Beach has many charms that make for a fabulous day at the beach. One is a beach pool, a long stretch of Bay water cut off from the ocean much of the year. Kids often skip playing in the ocean waves altogether to splash around here, where the water is still and warmed through on hot days. Another is Rodeo Lagoon in the surrounding valley, where you can walk the paths to watch for shorebirds.
Families can also test their climbing skills by exploring the cliffs on the beachside, where tide pools collect in rock crevices. Make your way to the top for a view of the beach, displaying crowds of sunbathers that love to gather here in the spring and summer months.
Rodeo Beach features a unique mineral composition, with semi-precious stones like jade, black agate, jasper, and more found among the colorful pebbles. The pebbly sand sprinkled with treasures makes this beach different from any other in the Bay or even the state of California. Bear in mind that collecting isn’t permitted here, so remember to return the stones and seashells you discover.
When you bring your picnic basket and take in the sun here, it’ll be easy to see why this beach is one of the best Marin County has to offer.
HelloSanFrancisco tip: Nearby attractions include the Marine Mammal Center, Point Bonita, Fort Baker, and the Bay Area Discovery Museum.
