Speisekammer: German eats in Alameda

Apr 28, 2010

Park Street in Alameda just keeps on getting fancier, with new restaurants popping up every year in the city’s efforts to revitalize the area. But a handful of restaurants have already been there for quite some time, like Speisekammer, recognized throughout the Bay as the go-to spot for authentic German food, good beer, and live jazz, acoustic guitar, and Americana music on the weekends.

There are two indoor dining rooms to choose from here: the back of the restaurant features dim lighting and large group seating, while the front of the restaurant provides a more relaxed vibe next to the bar. There’s also the outdoor “biergarten,” a great place to enjoy a delicious Sunday lunch or clink glasses after dinner as you toast a night out.

When it comes to the food, signature appetizers include potato pancakes with house-made applesauce, smoked trout, and bread dumplings with bacon. Entrees like cabbage rolls stuffed with beef, grilled and smoked pork chops served with Sauerkraut, and beef tri-tip marinated in red wine and spices convert patrons into regulars who keep coming back for another taste of the restaurant’s distinct flavors.

Speisekammer understands the times. Eating out is becoming a luxury as folks tighten their belts while waiting for the economy to perk back up again. That’s why the restaurant’s Recession Menu is a hit, offering popular dishes in half sizes. It’s great for those with smaller appetites, or those saving room for another glass of Hefeweisen.

HelloSanFrancisco Tip: Speisekammer has a kid’s menu, too, with plenty of “Spatzle” (German pasta) to choose from. Speisekammer is open Tuesday - Sunday from 12 to 3 p.m. and from 5 to 9 p.m.. Open 'til 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
