Located off the Gilman Street exit in Berkeley, Picante has stayed true to its 6th Street spot since the 80’s. The ownership has changed, and so has the color. But consistently prepared, authentic Mexican food is what keeps the restaurant popular, along with the assurance of a distinct, local experience.
Nearby attractions like Studio Grow and the Berkeley Marina bring the families around regularly. There are also a range of shopping choices to lure you to the neighborhood, from Gilman Street’s unique furniture warehouses and art galleries to upscale 4th Street shops. A diverse selection of restaurants beckon, too … so why would you choose Picante over 4th Street’s Tacubaya or the Pyramid Factory just across the way?
The food is made from scratch, and you can watch the tortillas being made. The ingredients that don’t come straight from Mexico, selected during one of the owners’ many trips across the border, are fresh and locally purchased. The shrimp in the ceviches was sustainably farmed, and high-quality, Niman Ranch pork and beef are used in the tamales and carne asadas. Chicken dishes like Pollo Asado and Chicken Mole use farm-raised chickens from Petaluma Poultry.
The traditional flavors, though, are all from Mexico. Like the colorful paper hanging from the ceiling in the main dining area. And the hand-picked tiles in the walls. And the brightly colored rooms. And the craft of tortilla making. There are extensive vegetarian options and a kid’s menu. Even the beverage list is complete, with everything from agua frescas to acclaimed margaritas to Mexican soda.
The food is simple and not overdone. Funny that it’s considered gourmet, because eating here is completely low-maintenance. You order up at the counter, take your number, and find a seat at a table either inside the restaurant or out on the garden patio. Finding an empty seat may be the hardest part. Good thing the food arrives quickly.
